Canthopexy - Procedures

Duration

30-60 minutes

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia with sedation

Result

Lasting result, 5-8 years

Overview

Canthopexy is a suspension technique of the lateral canthal tendon without releasing it, indicated for patients with a slight droop of the outer eye corner or to prevent lower lid retraction after blepharoplasty. The procedure subtly tightens the lower lid and gives the gaze a rested, fresh appearance.

Dr. Mubariz Mammadli frequently combines canthopexy with lower blepharoplasty to support the lid and prevent complications such as scleral show or ectropion. Incisions are minimal, hidden in the outer corner of the eye, and the result is natural and discreet β€” without an overly tilted look.

  • People undergoing lower blepharoplasty
  • Patients with lax lower lid or slow snap-back test
  • People wanting a subtle lift of the gaze
  • Patients with a history of mild ectropion or scleral show

  • Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia
  • Small incision in the outer corner of the eye
  • Lateral canthal tendon plication with non-absorbable suture to periosteum
  • Fine intradermic suture closure

Recovery and aftercare

  • Cold compresses for 48 hours

Frequently asked questions

Canthopexy or canthoplasty β€” what's the difference?

Canthopexy plicates the tendon without releasing it, a more conservative option. Canthoplasty releases and repositions it, giving a more significant change in eye shape.

Why pair canthopexy with lower blepharoplasty?

To support the lower lid after skin and fat removal, preventing ectropion or scleral show β€” complications of isolated lower blepharoplasty.

How long is recovery?

Social activity resumes in 7-10 days. Residual swelling fades in 3 weeks, with the final result at 6 weeks.

Will it significantly change my eye shape?

No. Canthopexy provides a subtle, natural lift. For a more significant shape change, canthoplasty or a Bella Eyes procedure is more appropriate.

How long does it last?

The effect is lasting, generally 5-8 years. In younger patients or those with firm skin, durability may be longer.
