facial reconstructive surgery
Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery for post-traumatic, oncologic or congenital defects, restoring aesthetics and function.
Duration
1-6 hours depending on complexity
Anesthesia
Local, regional or general
Result
Definitive; scar maturation at 12 months
Overview
Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery addresses patients who need facial structures restored after trauma, skin cancer excisions, congenital defects or post-surgical sequelae. Dr. Mubariz Mammadli uses the full range of reconstructive techniques β primary closure, skin grafts, local, regional or microsurgical flaps β choosing the solution that delivers the best aesthetic and functional result.
Planning starts from the facial aesthetic subunits (forehead, cheek, nose, lips, eyelids, ear) and respects relaxed skin tension lines for hidden scars and natural results. Reconstruction can be performed in one or several operative stages, depending on the complexity of the defect and the area involved.
Who it is for
- Patients with skin defects after tumor excision (basal cell, squamous cell, melanoma)
- People with post-traumatic facial sequelae (scars, tissue defects)
- Patients with congenital facial malformations
- People with unsatisfactory results from previous interventions
- Good general health and availability for staged reconstruction if needed
Procedure overview
- Clinical evaluation and imaging (CT/MRI when needed)
- Detailed planning with aesthetic subunits and tension lines
- Local, regional or general anesthesia depending on complexity
- Excision of pathology (when applicable) and reconstruction with local flap, graft or microsurgical flap
- Precise multilayer sutures and dressing tailored to the reconstructed area
Recovery and aftercare
- Specific dressings for 5-10 days depending on area and technique
- Suture removal at 5-10 days (facial)
- Strict local hygiene and healing ointments
- Strict sun protection for 6-12 months for optimal scar
- Follow-ups at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months
Frequently asked questions
What types of facial defects do you treat?
We treat post-traumatic defects (lacerations, wounds, fractures with tissue loss), defects after skin cancer excisions, congenital malformations, hypertrophic/keloid scars and sequelae after previous procedures.
Can reconstruction be done in the same session as tumor excision?
Yes, in most cases. Oncologic excision is followed immediately by primary reconstruction with a local flap or graft, if the margins are confirmed clear by frozen section or histopathology.
What is the difference between a graft and a flap?
A graft is tissue transferred without its own blood supply, dependent on the recipient bed. A flap keeps its own vascular pedicle and is used for large defects or areas with limited vascularization.
How visible will the scars be?
Scars are planned to follow aesthetic subunits and natural facial lines. After 6-12 months of maturation they become discreet, and if needed they can be further optimized with surgical revision, laser or microneedling.
How long is full recovery?
Functional recovery takes 2-4 weeks, while scar maturation continues for up to 12 months. Periodic check-ups follow healing and optimize the outcome.
